Malvasia de la Rioja
Variety grown mainly in the Valencian Community, in Castilla – La Mancha and in Aragon, also cultivated in La Rioja, Navarra and Penedés (Catalonia). Also known with the name of Alarije (Extremadura), Aris (Castilla – La Mancha), Rojal, Subirat Parent (Catalonia) and Torrontés de Madrid. It has a large, medium-compact cluster and a medium-sized, spherical berry. This vine of average vigour and upright growth habit prefers short pruning and topping such to allow the aeration of the clusters. It has a medium-early budburst period. Very susceptible to botrytis as well as powdery and downy mildew. Adaptable to dry, hilly and well-ventilated environments and low fertile soils. The excess of nitrogen, water and fertility can compromise not only the quality, but also the quantity of the product. It is a variety of very rich yield with a medium-early ripening period. It produces straw-yellow wines, which often come in golden tones, due to their high oxidase content. Suitable for production of young wines, with good acidity, medium alcohol content and good flavouring. Also suitable for blending with Viura and, with enough control, to aging in barrels.
