Bud-burst period: everage.
Ripening period: everage.
Yield: abundant and constant.
Ampelographic characters:
the variety is relatively homogeneous; the differences being cluster size and acidity. The bud has a globose sub-cottony apex of silvery white colour with carminate edges. The leaf is medium-sized, orbicular, or pentagonal and three-lobed. The petiolar sinus is open V- or more rarely U-shaped. The underside is arachnoid. The cluster is large, elongated, pyramidal, sometimes winged and semi-compact. The berry is medium-sized and almost disc-like in shape. The skin is pruinose, of medium thickness, and has a yellowish-amber epidermis on the sun-exposed sides. The pulp has a neutral taste.
Cultural aptitude:
vine of good vigour with expanded growth habit. It prefers clayey-calcareous and siliceous-tuffaceous soils with abundant skeleton where it can perform best quality-wise.
Training system and pruning:
considering the vigour and the limited basal fertility, medium-expansion systems of training, such as Guyot or spurless “Archetto Toscano” (a Tuscan version of Guyot) with medium-to-long pruning, are preferred.
Susceptibility to diseases and adverse conditions:
it is not particularly susceptible to any grape disease.
Enological potential:
the wine has a pale straw-yellow colour, quite alcoholic, delicately scented and slightly aromatic. It can be blended with other more neutral wines, bringing aromas and finesse.
Clones in propagation:
Vernaccia di S. Gimignano VCR375, UFIRCSG3, UFIRCSG5, UFIRCSG13, UFIRCSG15, UFIRCSG16, UFIRCSG17, UFIRCSG19, UFIRCS414. The clones selected above have been selected in San Gimignano in collaboration with the University of Florence and the Vernaccia Consortium. They are characterized by diversity regarding the size and compactness of the cluster, the total acidity and the aromatic complex in the wine.
