Typical variety of northern Portugal. Small vineyard can also be found in California and Australia. The medium-small, cylindrical, winged, not very compact cluster carries a medium-small, spherical, black-blue berry, with juicy pulp and thick skin. Vine of high vigour and almost creeping growth habit, it has an early bud-burst period. It has an average-low susceptibility to major diseases. It prefers warm, dry and well-exposed to the sun climates. Adaptable to different training and pruning systems. Long pruning is preferred to balance production or in case of fertile environments. This vine of low yield has a late ripening period. It produces ruby red wines with low intensity, medium aromaticity and delicate aromatic structure with round and elegant tannins. Used in the production of both liqueur wines and table wines. It maximizes its oenological potential when the grape ripens well with 13-14° of potential alcohol.
