Product Sheet

Sangiovese

It is, according to all authors, a vine of Tuscan origin or, at any rate, native of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. It is well established throughout central Italy with many well distinctive and different biotypes. In recent years, its cultivation has spread to the South of Italy and on the Islands. Known in Corsica as Nielluccio.

Bud burst period: medium.
Ripening period: medium.
Yield: rich and constant; it is important not to exaggerate with the burden of gems in order not to downgrade the quality of the product.
Ampelographic characters:

this variety is quite differentiated; biotypes vary by cluster size or shape, berry size, leaf shape and vigour. A high number of clones are currently being cultivated, as different biotypes, in quite a few different areas. The bud is whitish green in colour, expanded or semi-expanded, with a slightly carminate edge. The leaves are medium-sized, pentagonal, five- and sometimes three-lobed. The petiolar sinus is U- or sometimes V-shaped, more-or-less wide and slightly open petiolar sinus. The underside is hairless. The cluster varies in size from medium to medium-large and to medium-small, depending on cylindrical-pyramidal or conical-pyramidal biotypes, and can carry one or two wings. The medium-sized ovoid berry has a pruinose thin skin and a simple-tasting pulp.

Cultural aptitudes:

vigorous vine with an upright growth habit: t has solid shoots with a medium-length internode. Widely adaptable to different environments, it prefers not fertile soils where it gives a good quality product; it requires dry, tendentially warm climates for a good ripening of grapes.

Training system and pruning:

adaptable to different forms of training, both short and long pruning. It has easy-to-conduct shoots, but it requires green pruning to avoid attacks of cryptogamic diseases to clusters. Easy to all forms of training and completely mechanized pruning.

Susceptibility to diseases and adverse conditions:

a little susceptible to powdery mildew, more to botrytis. Susceptible to winter cold and spring frosts. Slightly suffering from chlorosis.

Enological potential:

it gives a wine of intense ruby red colour, tannic, full-bodied, harmonious, with a pleasant bitterish aftertaste; fruity when young, when aged it gives off aromas thus acquiring considerable refinement.
