Petit Verdot
This variety originated in Medoc (France) and it was once grown in the cooler areas of the region, but it is now spreading to warmer areas due to its late ripening. It is cultivated in central and southern Italy, too.

Bud-burst period: early.
Ripening period:everage-late.
Yield: everage.
Ampelographic characters:
this variety is highly uniform, partly due to the fact that, for several years, only one French clone was available: the Inra-Entav400. The bud apex is open, cottony and greenish-white. The leaves are medium-sized, pentagonal, five-lobed. The closed V-shaped petiolar sinus has sometimes teeth. The leaf blade is blistered and wavy. The underside is slightly tomentose. The cluster is medium-small, conical-pyramidal, elongated and compact to medium-compact, sometimes with a wing. The medium-small, spheroidal berry has a blue-black colored, pruinose skin.
Cultural aptitude:
vine of medium high-vigor with a horizontal growth habit. It adapts to different types of soil, but it prefers cooler, lighter soils where it ripens earlier. Its ripening does not always reach an optimal stage in temperate environments with humid and cold soils.
Training system and pruning:
it adapts to different pruning systems, but it prefers espalier training systems, Guyot in particular. Due to its expanded and drooping growth habit, in the counter-espalier system, green pruning and tying are required.
Susceptibility to diseases and adverse conditions:
susceptible to powdery mildew and mites, good tolerance of downy mildew and botrytis. Susceptible to hot, dry winds and to spring frosts.
Enological potential:
it gives wines with a good color intensity and spicy, red fruits scents with a full, dry, tannic flavor. Suitable for long aging and blending with other wines to which it brings color, structure and acidity. It is rarely vinified pure.
Clones in propagation:
Petit Verdot VCR207, VCR82. French clones:Inra-Entav 400, 1058.
Clones undergoing homologation procedure:
Petit Verdot VCR458.
