Nebbiolo
It probably originated in the Alba area; it has been grown since ancient times and has spread to well-defined areas in Piedmont and Lombardy, creating very noble wines, named after their growing areas (Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Ghemme etc.).

Bud-burst period: early.
Ripening period: late.
Yield good and constant if the grown in the appropriate terroirs.
Ampelographic characters:
this variety is very heterogeneous, although sometimes the differences are related to environmental factors. The most widespread is the “Lampia” type, which has common characteristics with the overall variety population. The bud has an expanded, silvery-white apex with whitish cottony apical leaflets. The leaves are more than medium-sized; they are pentagonal, three- or five-lobed and almost glabrous. The petiolar sinus is V- or U-shaped, rarely lyre-shaped. The underside is arachnoid. The cluster is medium-sized, pyramidal, winged and semi-compact. The berry is medium-sized and spheroid in shape, with pruinose, thick and dark purple skin. The juicy sweet acidic and astringent flesh has a simple flavour.
Cultural aptitude:
vigorous vine with a semi-upright growth habit, has long shoots with long internodes. It can be grown only in the north, in fresh, clayey-calcareous soils, but with a dry climate, for example in hilly areas with excellent exposure to avoid coulure and for a good grape ripening.
Training system and pruning:
this vine needs adequate manual pruning, both in winter and summer. It requires averagely expanded training systems and long pruning, as in the traditional Guyot. The good basal fertility in the most recent clones allows pruning with a single fruiting cane of 7-12 buds.
Susceptibility to diseases and adverse conditions:
susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis, it needs therefore adequate green pruning. Susceptible to spring frosts.
Enological potential:
it produces wines that vary depending on the growing area, but always extremely high in quality. The exceptional organoleptic properties of this variety ensure the production of wines for great connoisseurs. Intense ruby-red in colour, full-bodied, well endowed with tannins, fairly acidic, alcoholic, almost fruity and dry in flavor, they become extremely refined with long aging, evolving their own natural rusticity into a noble and aristocratic bouquet.
