Bud-burst period: early.
Ripening period: late.
Yield: average and constant.
Ampelographic characters:
generally, two different populations are grown, one in the Taurasi area and one in the Vulture area. Their differences often depend on the different environmental conditions. The bud is open, cottony, green-colored or bronzed-yellow. The leaves are medium-small in size, pentagonal, three-lobed with a V-shaped, closed petiolar sinus. The cluster is medium-small, cylindrical or winged and fairly compact. The berries are medium-sized and round, with a pruinose skin. Taurasi biotype differs from Vulture as it is less vigorous, its berry is slightly smaller and its cluster tends to be cylindrical with a slight tendency to millerandage.
Cultural aptitude:
fairly vigorous vine, with long robust shoots with medium internodes and an upright balanced growth habit. In classic growing areas at altitudes of averagely 300-500 m above sea level it prefers loose, well-exposed soils; in warmer areas it adapts to different types of soils.
Training system and pruning:
in warm climates it adapts to all forms of training and pruning; in growing areas that are located in cooler climates, counter espalier systems are recommended, with careful green pruning in order to grow well-proportioned shoots. These operations will protect the cluster from botrytis, will ensure the good lignification of shoots and a perfectly ripe product.
Susceptibility to diseases and adverse conditions:
susceptible to botrytis and sour rot in rainy and humid climates. Suffers from prolonged drought.
Enological potential:
it gives intense ruby-red-colored wines with a fresh fruity taste and an excellent aromatic and polyphenolic profile, full-bodied. Harmonic. When aged it acquires finesse, releasing delicate scents and becoming an aristocratic wine at the highest level of classic Italian wines.
