Bud-burst period: everage-early.
Ripening period: average-early.
Yield: good and constant in the classical growing areas where chlorosis does not cause alternated yield.
Ampelographic characters:
this variety is fairly homogeneous; the biotypes differ in terms of cluster size, consistency, botrytis resistance and partial chlorosis resistance. The bud has an averagely expanded, cottony, whitish apex. The leaves are medium-sized, rounded, three-lobed, cup-shaped, slightly blistered and dark green. The petiolar sinus can be slightly open or closed. The underside is arachnoid. The cluster is medium-small, cylindrical, often winged and compact. The berry is spherical, medium-to-small and moderately resistant to detachment, with a rather thin skin and juicy, sweet and simple-flavoured flesh.
Cultural aptitude:
vine of medium vigor with a semi-upright growth habit, long shoots and fairly developed internodes. It does not adapt to chlorotic and humid soils and it prefers dry climates and good exposure. Even in hot climates its yield is abundant and excellent in quality.
Training system and pruning:
it adapts to various training systems and planting patterns provided they are not too wide. It prefers medium or short pruning.
Susceptibility to diseases and adverse conditions:
normal, except for susceptibility to botrytis; very susceptible to chlorosis, winter cold and grapevine phytoplasmas.
Enological potential:
it produces a straw-yellow wine with greenish reflections and delicate scents and flavour. Dry, velvety, with a high alcohol content and a medium-to-high fixed acidity. Elegant, full-bodied. With aging it takes on golden shades and delicate scents which make it one of the greatest wines. It gives a product of excellent quality both as a sparkling mono-varietal wine or in blends with Chardonnay and other Pinots.
Clones in propagation:
Pinot Blanc VCR1, VCR5, VCR7, VCR9, VCR45, LB16, LB18; French clones: Inra-Entav 54.
