Bud-burst period: late.
Ripening period: everage.
Yield: copious, sometimes excessive, hence it is necessary to carry out pre-harvesting operations.
Ampelographic characters:
the variety has a fair degree of variability. This is due to the presence of stronger or weaker productive biotypes each with larger or smaller clusters and differences in vigour. The bud is expanded and arachnoid, of whitish-green color. The leaves are medium to medium-large, pentagonal and five-lobed. The petiolar sinus is lyre- or U-shaped. The underside is arachnoid. It has a flat, medium-thick leaf blade, a medium-sized, pyramidal, winged (one or two wings) cluster, which is compact or semi-compact. The berry is medium-sized and ovoidal in shape. The skin is of medium thickness and is very pruinose.
Cultural aptitude:
vine of medium-high vigour, with expansive vegetation. It prefers dry, poor soils, even stony ones. It is particularly resistant to hot and dry environments.
Trellising and pruning:
a rustic vine which adapts to various training systems, from gobelet to Guyot and spurred cordon. Ideal, however, are expanded systems with medium-long pruning.
Resistance to diseases and adverse conditions:
susceptible to downy mildew and very susceptible to powdery mildew, normal susceptibility to other cryptogams and parasites. It avoids possible spring late frosts thanks to its late bud-bursting period.
Enological potential:
it produces a full-bodied, alcoholic, robust ruby-red wine. At times its tannicity is particularly rough: therefore, blending and barrel ageing are useful.
Clones in propagation:
Carignano VCR142, VCR143, VCR252; CFC8; French clones: Inra-Entav 7,9,63,64,65, 152,171, 274.
Clones undergoing homologation procedure:
VCR471, VCR473.
