The climate changes, the market changes, and the attention of winegrowers in the choice of varieties and clones for new vineyards must also change.
A focus on innovation
VCR, Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo, is the reference point for vineyard nurseries all over the world, with an assortment of over 450 clones of international and national varieties.
A leadership achieved thanks to a strong focus on innovation that has led, among other things, to the development of 14 new resistant varieties 100% made in Italy and the development of the new rootstocks of the M series.
A focus that also concerns clonal selection, an activity that at the VCR Research Center is focused on meeting new needs in terms of quality, sustainability, safety and respect for biodiversity.
Multiple Objectives
In fact, the new VCR clones must:
- help producers cope with the impact of climate change, thanks to the search for biotypes characterized by more adequate vegetative cycles;
- the goal of greater sustainability has prompted VCR to renew its efforts in the search for biotypes characterized by greater tolerance to diseases and pests but also to environmental stresses.
- The development of softer selection protocols makes it possible to set up more resilient vineyards that help winegrowers in their goal of protecting biodiversity.
- the high sanitary standard achieved by the certified category viticultural propagation material is accompanied by a renewed attention to quality in VCR. In fact, the new VCR clones stand out for their improved agronomic and oenological characteristics.
Some examples:
This is the case, for example, for the whites Tocai Friulano (VCR 73), Traminer aromatico (VCR 384, VCR 388) and Trebbiano toscano (VCR 454) which show aromatic frameworks emphasized in the typical varietal notes.
The reds Grignolino (VCR 22, VCR 25), Lambrusco Marani (VCR 131) and Sagrantino (VCR 67) are able to develop excellent body and structure.
Falanghina (VCR 274, VCR 276), Terrano (VCR 65, VCR 66) and Cesanese d’Affile (VCR 85, VCR 86), thanks to their late ripening, maintain good levels of acidity, proving useful in the response to climate change.
