VCR ROOKSTOCKS:
PRODUCTION POTENTIAL AND A UNIQUE RANGE

It is common knowledge that the rootstock, used at the beginning only as a means of defence against Phylloxera, has acquired an important role of mediator between the climatic and soil environment and the characteristics of each cultivar.
On the grounds of this specific needs Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo graft more than 4000 different cultivar/rootstock combinations yearly, with the purpose to provide every vine-grower with a product, that may fit his business requirement in the best way.
More than 1.000 hectares of mother plantations of the different rootstocks, in particular Kober 5BB, S04, 1103 Paulsen, 420A, 110R, are grown in Rauscedo by the members of the cooperative.
It is worth to point out that all the plantations suitable for the production of rootstocks have been created exclusively by using material originated from clone selections of base category, of national or foreign sources.

RIPARIA X RUPESTRIS GROUP 3309 C: it is a rootstock of feeble vigour, it is well suitable to medium mixture soils, not subject to cause chlorosis and not dry. Its feeble vigour enables its utilization in dense plantations for high quality crops, but it is essential to bear in mind that this rootstocks shows a low rusticity.
101.14: it brings on a much early maturation thanks to its short vegetative cycle and feeble vigour. It is suitable for cool, humid environments and not calcareous soils.
SCHWARZMANN: it is a rootstock of medium vigour, well suitable for dry, arid, not much calcareous and also heavy soils.
VINIFERA X BERLANDIERI GROUP 41 B: it has a quite good vigour, a high resistance to limestone and it can be used in warm and subject to cause chlorosis environments, or in northern areas, provided that the soils are not cold, asphyctic and heavy.
FERCAL: it has a high resistance to limestone, higher than 41B and 140Ru. It is vigorous and sensitive to magnesium lack and it can be used in soils where the level of active limestone is hardly tolerable by other rootstocks.

BERLANDIERI X RIPARIA GROUP 5BB: it is suitable for cool environments, with soils of different mixture (from heavy to light), also rich in skeleton provided that they're not calcareous. Given its good vigour, its use should be avoided in too fertile soils.
S04: it's a rootstock of average vigour, it can be appropriately used also in heavy soils, provided that they're not asphyctic or causing excessive chlororis. It is advisable not to use it in combination with cultivars sensitive to desiccation of the rachis (cluster stem) and in soil showing an unbalanced ratio between magnesium, potassium and calcium.
420A: it is a rootstock with moderate vigour, suitable for dry environments and heavy soils, also if causing slight chlorosis. The initial development is slow, mostly in cold soils; afterwards it can bring on a fairly good vigour.
161.49: its limited vigour and fairly good resistance to limestone enable its utilization in different environments, especially for plantations of average and high density.
5C: its characteristics are quite similar to Kober 5BB, it differs from it for a lesser vigour.
BERLANDIERI X RUPESTRIS GROUP 1103 P: it is a vigorous, flexible rootstock, it has a high degree of affinity with all the cultivars. It resists drought and suits almost any type of soil, in particular clayey-calcareous soils.
779 P: it is very vigorous, rustic, it suits poor and difficult soils. It has a good resistance to drought, whereas it is less adaptable than 1103 to calcareous soils.
775 P: it is vigorous and it suits not excessively heavy soils, even if dry or averagely calcareous.
110 R: it suits very difficult environments and not very calcareous soils. It's a typical rootstock for hot and dry environments.
140 RU: it is very vigorous and shows a high resistance to drought and limestone. Not always it enables the right vegetative-productive balance in the European cultivars grafted on it: this brings the ensuing quality decline of the grapes.
