GENETIC ASPECT
From this point of view the clone selection represents an effective system that, within the variability limits of a given cultivar-population, allows the isolation and the propagation of the biotypes which show improving features related to factors such as the production capacity, the quality potential and other features, which are interesting for cultivation.
This system provides for an accurate research on the variability of the vine populations undergoing the selection and for the subsequent phenotype identification.
Once some interesting biotypes are identified, comparison and homologation fields are established: Here every biotype that has been isolated will be grown in an environment that shows a particular vocation for the cultivation of the examined cultivar. A series of morphological, physiological and productive surveys will allow to highlight the phenotypic and genotypic variances.
ENOLOGICAL CONTROLS AND MICRO-WIN EMAKING
The crops coming from the single biotypes of wine grape cultivars must be vinified separately. Careful chemical tests and tasting sessions held by commissions of specialists are carried out on the wine samples obtained from these grapes.
The purpose of micro-winemaking is to check if the presumed clone is able to give a product with improved characteristics in comparison with the cultivar standards.
In particular, careful analysis are made on the alcoholic content, the total acidity, the pH, the dry extract and the ash content, with the purpose to provide the tasting commission with reliable analytic data for an objective evaluation of the worth of a clone.
It is opportune to remind that, for white wines, high acidity and pH figures, together with a noble aromatic structure, are substantially important differential elements in comparison with the cultivar population.

As regards the red wines, the body and the structure, together with good contents of tannins and polyphenols, are as important distinctive elements.
For the table grape cultivars, besides the morphological features of the cluster, the following element are mostly examined: the colour, the berry detachment index, the transportability, the pH, the fixed acidity and the sugar content.
After 3 years of sanitary tests and agronomic, oenological and genetic verifications, after having ascertained that the selected biotypes show positive differential characters in comparison with the cultivar-population, the new clones are ready for their official homologation and for the following multiplication and diffusion.

Until today more than 200 clones have been homologated by Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo: 175 of these clones are part of the new “VCR” series, which is characterized by a superior genetic and sanitary standard.

  PHYTOSANITARY ASPECT
By the time of pre-selection, that is to say during the early singling out of the biotypes, a visual sanitary control is carried out with the purpose to detect the main virus diseases.
Afterwards and parallely with the genetic selection the serodiagnosis tests ELISA and PCR are carried out: These tests enable to get a very quick screening for some specific viruses. Then the tested biotypes undergo the wood tests (indexing) with the use of indicators plants of different species and cultivars for a period of 3 years.
